Office cleaning is vital to keep desks germ-free

February 13, 2010

Office cleaning is vital when it comes to keeping work spaces free from dirt and germs, an expert has suggested.

Frances Both, health and society specialist at The Guardian, said that lurking beneath most workstations are likely to be a “hotbed of nasties”, which necessitates regular office cleaning.

She pointed out that there are typically thousands of microbes per square inch festering on desks, lingering in between key pads on keyboards and swarming over computer accessories.

The prevalence of germs in the average office is so bad that a study by the University of Arizona found that there are 400 times as many germs on the typical worker’s desk than on a toilet seat.

If left unchecked, germs could build up and pose a serious threat to health and safety, as well as bringing down the overall appearance of the office.

Working professionals are advised to clean their laptops, monitors and keyboards at least three times a week and always wash their hands after going to the toilet.

Workers could also consider hiring a contract cleaning service to conduct a thorough office cleaning.

Consumers prefer green cleaning products

January 31, 2010

A new survey suggests that consumers prefer to spend their money on environmentally-friendly cleaning products and services.

According to a report by Burst Media, consumers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly products, with 90 per cent saying they have incorporated a level of greenness in their lives in some form.

More than half (59 per cent) of respondents said they would pay more for green domestic cleaning products, while 58 per cent said they would be willing to pay premium for eco-friendly laundry detergents.

Some 56 per cent of consumers surveyed said they believe the green claims made on product marketing to some extent.

However, a quarter are more dubious, with 25.1 per cent of respondents saying they do not believe the environmentally-friendly claims that are found on product marketing material.

One in ten consumers said they never believe the eco credentials that products claim to have.

The report found that overall, women are more likely to buy a product that is advertised as being green, while men lead the way when it comes to total commitment to green credentials.

Hospital pledges to maintain cleanliness

January 2, 2010

A hospital trust has pledged to maintain its commitment to upholding excellent standards of cleanliness.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust said it has improved cleanliness and hygiene as part of its annual self-assessment for health watchdog the Care Quality Commission, reports the Herald.

A spokesperson for the trust said Derriford Hospital in Plymouth has shown drastic improvement within the last 12 months, when it was found to be falling short of five standards.

The trust is now compliant with all 42 of the government’s Standards for Better Health, as of October 31st this year.

A new cleaning company has been contracted to maintain standards of cleanliness across the hospital’s wards and the trust has invested up to £600,000 more per year to safeguard patients’ health, improve catering and continue its compliance with regulations set out by Care Quality Commission.

The hospital also said it has improved its training of staff in order to keep children safe on wards.

In July 2008 and in February this year, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust failed hygiene inspections in a number of crucial areas including cleanliness and infection control, decontamination of re-usable medical devices, staff training in child protection and “well-designed, maintained environments”.

Arco unveils new cleaning range

January 2, 2010

Workplace cleaning products supplier Arco has unveiled a new range of cleaning products designed to make the job of commercial cleaners easier.

According to SHP Online, the firm has introduced a range of Nilfisk floor cleaners, which are designed to help professional cleaners remove tough dirt marks with minimum effort.

The floor cleaners also help reduce the likelihood of slips and trips and are ergonomically designed with users in mind. The Nilfisk scrub dryers and sweepers are very simple to operate and come in a range of sizes and specifications to suit all types of cleaning.

Arco has also included the EcoAir Hand Dryer into its janitorial range. The high-power hand-held device uses minimum energy (just 417W) and dries hands in seconds, helping to prevent the spread of infection.

The dryer is designed to accommodate up to four filters – the Suberbac Hand Sanitiser, which uses motion-release technology that dispenses anti-bacterial gel as it dries; Anti-bac; Odour Neutral, a carbon filter that helps re-oxygenate the air and Air Fresh, which helps remove bad odours and replace them with fragrant smells.

Aussan Laboratories recently unveiled the environmentally-friendly Revolution organic cleaning range, which helps domestic cleaners carry out their duties with minimal harm to the environment.

Staff asked to help clean hospitals

December 19, 2009

Medical staff at one of the UK’s top children’s hospitals have been asked to clean wards in their spare time.

Bosses at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool asked doctors and nurses including consultants and managers to help improve levels of cleanliness across the hospital’s wards outside working hours.

The call came ahead of a visit by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission, who had previously criticised the hospital’s hygiene standards back in April.

Unions said Alder Hey Children’s Hospital should employ the services of professional cleaning companies who are approprately trained instead of relying on highly skilled doctors and nurses.

Dr Jaswinder Bamrah, of the British Medical Association, said: “They are over-using a highly skilled workforce to do what they are not trained to do. They need to look at the issue of who is paid to do the cleaning and sort it out.”

She added that is important properly trained cleaning professionals are employed to clean Alder Hey Children’s Hospital otherwise patients could be exposed to serious infections such as C difficile or MRSA.

London cleaning companies can provide you with the essential services for all your office cleaning needs.

‘Cleaners worth more to society than City bankers’

December 19, 2009

Cleaners are more valuable to society than City bankers, a new study from the New Economics Foundation suggests.

The organisation’s A Bit Rich? report reveals that elite City bankers earning £1 million or more in bonuses destroy £7 of value for every £1 they create, while cleaners create over £10 in value for every £1 they receive in pay.

Similarly, waste recycling workers generate £12 for every £1 that is spent on their wages.

Researchers reached their conclusions by measuring conventional economic returns including job creation but adding positive or negative changes in wellbeing to individuals and to society at large.

Eilis Lawlor, head of the Valuing What Matters team at the New Economics Foundation, said there needs to be a relationship between what people are paid and the value of their jobs to society.

“Pay levels often don’t reflect the true value that is being created,” she said. “As a society, we need a pay structure which rewards those jobs that create most societal benefit, rather than those that generate profits at the expense of society and the environment.”

Last month cleaners servicing Virgin trains on the West Coast Main Line went on strike to protest against low pay and poor employment conditions.
